Survey kinda thing.
I'm just curious how people will reply to this, cuz I've thought about it a bit too much but someone else always comes up with something I missed.

So, let's say the end of the world happens.  Society is thrown into complete chaos.  Your home is destroyed/looted/whatever, and all you have is one hiker's backpack full of gear (one of the big ones like this) and whatever weapons you can wear or strap to it or carry.  Assuming that somehow you had planned for this occurrence and packed your bag with everything you could both think of and could reasonably carry, what does your pack contain?  What are you wearing?  What weapons do you take with you? Again, this is all that you can reasonably carry on your person...no secret caches and no video game-type inventory management!

Assume that a tent/bedroll/equivalent can be rolled up atop your pack, though you may specify which type you choose to carry.  Also keep in mind that you can rely on nothing from modern civilization (e.g. clean water, sanitation, or food sources) and that everyone else is in the same situation as you.

And last - where do you go now?

Edit:  added my list:

Weapons:
-AK-47
-A handgun (Jackson recommends a Glock 21 for reliability and stopping power).  With a silencer.
-A machete.
-2 boot knives (one serrated, one double-edged)

Clothing:

-Military bivouac bedroll
-Probably my knee high steeltoe Grinders boots
-Winter weight BDUs (top and bottom) & BDU winter jacket
-thermal underwear
-a couple of tank tops
-spare socks and underwear
-Kevlar-lined gloves (to keep from getting my hands cut with something possibly infectious while scavenging)
-Military-issue rain poncho
-A couple of handkerchiefs
-Some kind of warm cap

Food & Water:
-Water filtration bottle (filters larger particles)
-Water purification tablets
-1 medium cooking pot for cooking and boiling drinking water
-Spork!
-Freeze-dried chicken (almost no weight to it, tons of protein, can carry a lot of it)
-Powdered Gainer's Fuel or equivalent powdered drink mix.  Very high calorie and nutrition content in a very compact form.  It'd be fucking disgusting mixed with water, but cest la vie.
-Candy bars.  Yes.  High calorie, high fat (which I may not get from other sources), sugar that I will likewise lack.

Medical/Health:
-A few bottles of multivitamins
-Hand sanitizer
-Oral antibiotics (a week or two of a couple broad-spectrum standards, and a few that are more exotic/specific)
-Painkillers (NSAID & some of the heavy stuff just in case)
-Basic Band-Aids and butterfly closures
-Antibiotic ointment
-Alcohol wipes
-The type of needle and thread used to do stitches, in individually sterilized, sealed packs
-Gauze & surgical tape
-Moist wipes
-Pack of disposable filter masks a la SARS
-Bar soap

Misc:
-Waterproof matches
-Lighter
-Compass & local map
-500ft of lightweight cord/rope

And also a couple of cyanide tabs cuz fuck all if they're taking me alive.

Not entirely sure I could fit/carry all that, but most of it is small stuff so, maybe.  At least for the short-term.  There are definite advantages to living somewhere temperate like the SF area...no real insect problems, no tropical type diseases, no extreme cold weather and uncommon genuinely hot weather.  I'd probably head down to Pacifica, behind where I grew up as a kid.  I know where there's a freshwater stream that flows into the ocean, super well hidden, and I know all the area like the back of my hand.  Plus there is a small bunker down there I'd like to take over.

I'll have to find a link to some good discussions on this topic. It tends to come up from time to time on at least one of the boards I sometimes frequent.

Good knife (or two or more, pocket, leg sheath, etc)
Firesteel
tarp (maybe 2 sizes, good for shelter, dew collection, etc)
good chunk of 550 cord
cooking / water pot
dry clothes
spare boots
poncho
maps / compass
military 3-layer sleeping bag system
SBR'd (6-8" barrel) Ruger 10/22 w/ folding stock, dot optic & suppressor, a few spare mags, a few bricks of good ammo
magnifying glass
toothbrushes, combs
thick towel / washcloth
baking soda - few boxes

fill all remaining space with dry-bagged TP!

All I'd really want with me for weaponry is a good knife (check). I'm from a country where we've got good rainfall and, sure, if it's properly apocalyptic, it's probably not safe to drink that but, frankly, I don't know that there's much we can do about it here. Food's not that much of a big deal either. There's plenty of wild food and even more just growing in the fields around me. I'd probably bring some rations anyway.

Good pair of walking boots and some changes of socks and underwear. My thermals and waterproofs and a crappy but functional hat.

If I couldn't bag myself a car, I'd walk towards the coast. There's some villages down there that have good fishing and, frankly, it's not what most people would think to do. No point in being isolated. Most of these villages run without interference from the outside world anyway, so society collapsing won't bother them that much. The yobs and assholes will stick to the cities. The crazy isolationists will head for the hills and nature reserves. I'm going somewhere I've got access to water, salt and food.

Being in the UK is pretty handy. Either everything goes so far to shit you're totally fucked or, really, it wouldn't be too bad! =)

I agree, if it's just general anarchy and chaos then nothing really changes. This is what made the Uk in the first place over the last few thousand years.

I live on a farm in the middle of the country in the uk with several small towns and villages in the area. Form a police force to guard against intruders. Set up a government type system in the town, maybe election, or monarchy (monarchy's all started by someone twatting everyone else and everyone being afraid. Which is how a viking was once the king of Britain). Fortify said town. Impose peace on the land and destroy all violent intruders. Gradually conquer the country. Toy with the idea of setting up a money grabbing corrupt parliament before a revolution takes your head. Tax the buggery out of the people and keep out the immigrants. Send out explorers to rediscover the world and claim every bit of land they see (regardless of current occupants) in my name.

Which particular apocalypse has happened? Am I having to deal with a nuclear holocaust, zday, M. Night Shamalan general weirdness or what? Only reason I ask is because it will have an affect on what I pack and where I go. Or hell, even who I may allow to travel with me in the future.

Too many answers to that question, which is why I left it open. Let's assume not Z-Day and there is no nuclear fallout or rampant plague anymore than you'd normally expect without proper sanitation. I'm thinking more like recession > revolution > anarchy > chaos.

I'd totally have a cavalry saber because all the other nerds will be walking around with Katanas.

An AK for a gun, but a M1911 for a sidearm. Maybe a Sig Saur 229.

Clothes? what else, a blue jumpsuit with a 13 on the back.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]unsafe357
2009-05-12 05:45 am UTC (link)
Good choice on the sidearm(s) and primary. The 1911 is my all time favorite pistol and is definitely battle tested, but still needs more babying than a G21, plus has less capacity. A friend of mine once fired 5000 through his Glock and didn't have to clean it ONCE...no jams. I own a 1911 and a P229, but I can't make that same claim.

I too would carry the AK for the same reason I'd pack the Glock. Rugged reliability. The last thing I want to do during the apocalypse is clean my gun every other day. Might not have the time or the cleaning supplies.

LMAO - I too would have the blue jumpsuit and as many boxes of mentats as I could carry.

That's interesting to think about. So far my survival strategy has been to rely on horticulture, community, and guns.

If we're trapped here, we'd herd the unarmed yuppies in our building after eliminating other armed parties.
The moment food becomes hard to come by, I turn cannibal. I'd feel bad about that, but these people regularly try to kill me with their $70,000+ cars. Eating them is the noblest use for them.

Rest assured that either way, we have sufficient equipment on hand to ensure our short term survival.

I'm not going to put down a whole list, but I'd be packing a proper hunting rifle and ammo for that, and only a small pistol and a small amount of ammo for that. Ultimately, I think your survival would rely more on hunting than shooting people. The pistol would be to wave around to make sure people aren't going to fuck with you, but you don't actually want to be firing it much.

A sword; probably a katana. It's light, works without ammunition, plenty threatening. No safety, good in close quarters.

Knives, at least three. A sharpening stone.

I'd try and scrounge a bicycle, even a shitty one. Moving slowly on a bike is still about 12-20km/hr. Twice as fast as on foot.

I'd head out to the farms. Chaos hits, I'm fucking growing my own food. Raising potatoes and carrots isn't hard. Find an old farmhouse on some land near a forest. I'd probably stay here in the north. Canada's winters are hard, but bearable. Fewer people to contend with for resources. Access to plenty of clean water. With this much land, hard to believe there would be a lot of territory wars.
